Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming part of our everyday lives and workplace systems. From email filtering and online recommendations to generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, AI is influencing how organisations operate and how employees work.
This interactive AI Awareness session provides a practical introduction to AI, explaining what it is, how it works, where it already exists, and how it can be used responsibly. Participants will explore the difference between AI and automation, understand the strengths and limitations of AI systems, and consider the ethical, legal and governance issues associated with their use.
Through discussions, demonstrations and practical activities, learners will gain the confidence to engage with AI technologies safely, responsibly and effectively within their organisation.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain artificial intelligence in simple, practical terms.
- Distinguish between AI, automation and traditional technology.
- Identify examples of AI used in everyday life and within the workplace.
- Describe the key components that enable AI systems to function.
- Recognise the strengths, limitations and risks associated with AI-generated outputs.
- Understand why human judgement, accountability and oversight remain essential.
- Identify potential ethical issues including bias, fairness and transparency.
- Apply good practice when handling confidential, commercially sensitive and intellectual property-related information.
- Evaluate when AI can support workplace tasks and when human decision-making is required.
- Use AI tools with greater confidence, responsibility and awareness of organisational policies and governance requirements.
Anyone who is curious about how they can use AI in a professional setting.
Bring a Workplace Challenge - Delegates are asked to think of a genuine work-related task, problem, or opportunity where AI might be able to help. Having a real example to work with will make the practical exercises more relevant and valuable. Please ensure that any information you bring to the workshop is not confidential, commercially sensitive, or subject to intellectual property restrictions. Where necessary, anonymise names, organisations, projects, or data so that your example can be discussed safely.
Try out some AI Tools - Delegates should spend a little time exploring at least two AI tools before the workshop. You don't need to be an expert, just have a go and get a feel for how they work. Examples include:
- Microsoft Copilot
- ChatGPT
- Google GeminI
- Claude
- Perplexity
- Canva AI
